Today, Wednesday, Syrian President Al-Jolani received Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi and his accompanying delegation at Damascus. This is the first official visit by an Iraqi Prime Minister to Syria since the fall of the Bashar al-Assad government in late 2024.

The two countries share over 600 kilometers of border, and are seeking to strengthen bilateral relations and expand economic cooperation.

In the field of oil cooperation, Iraq recently began limited oil exports through Syria, a move that followed disruptions to maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. The two countries also signed a memorandum of understanding last July to revive the "Haditha-Baniyas" oil pipeline. This pipeline has been out of operation since 2003, following damage caused by the US invasion of Iraq.
